Tavira, or the Venice of the Algarve as it sometimes called, is one of the most beautiful towns of the region and is located in the eastern Algarve. It combines breathtaking beaches such as Ilha das cabanas, Ilha de Tavira and Praia do Barril, with a unique mix of traditional architecture with Moorish influences. The lovely city centre has a square called “Praça da República” surrounded by a town hall, a war memorial, a tourism office and several bars and restaurants. It’s a great place to sit, relax, enjoy the sun and watch the people pass by. Near Praça da República you find a garden called Jardim do Coreto, also known as Jardim Público de Tavira, here it’s very peaceful to walk around and also to see sometimes the street musicians in the garden.
There is a lot of places to visit in Tavira such as the Misericórdia church, that was also classified as a national monument in Portugal. From the outside it looks like an average church but the inside of the church is especially beautiful with blue painted tiles (azulejos) and the gold-plated altar looks very majestic, the Torre de Tavira that provides 360 degrees panoramic views of the town with the help of mirrors and lenses.
Tavira is a picturesque town that combines culture, history, tourism and also benefits from having very friendly locals.
