Alvor is a pretty Portuguese fishing town that has evolved into a relaxed and mature holiday destination. The town is situated on the banks of the Odiáxere River and within walking distance of one of the largest sandy beaches of southern Portugal, Meia Praia. Alvor has a distinctive Portuguese appearance with traditional whitewashed houses, narrow cobbled streets, and small fishing boats that are pulled up along the river banks. The town centre is filled with restaurants, cafes, and bars for all styles and tastes.
Alvor also offers some of the finest beaches of the Western Algarve with unique elevated walkways that cross the sand dunes and mudflats of the Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve. These pathways provide pleasant walks with scenic views over the estuary, which is a haven for birdlife.
From Alvor, it is just a short drive to visit the historic centre of Lagos, the city of Portimão with the Aqua Shopping Center and to Praia da Rocha - the place to be for nightlife, as it is crammed with theme bars, restaurants and late-night venues.
