The city of Olhão lies 8km east of Faro and is the largest port in the Algarve. It offers some of the region's most scenic areas and some of the best beaches in Europe. The present settlement was established in the 19th century by fishermen who settled here, living at the time in huts of straw. The city itself is a mixture of sights and sounds that demonstrate a life based around the sea.
The abundance of seafood in the area and the talent to turn them into absolutely delicious dishes has earned Olhão the reputation of the gastronomic capital of the Algarve. There is a Seafood Festival held in August, which lasts for 6 days with plenty of food, music, and dancing and should not be missed!
Just a short boat ride away you can find the natural treasures of Olhão including the magnificent Ria Formosa Reserve and the long, unspoiled beaches of the islands Culatra and Armona. The most prominent building of the old town is the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary built in the baroque style of the 17th century. The Market, can be found at the riverside area as well as the beautiful Olhanense Fishermen Gardens and Joaquim Lopes Gardens.
Olhão is a wonderfully surprising place to visit and to live where you can enjoy moments of peace and tranquility which are truly unforgettable!
