Lagoa is considered part of the Barlavento Algarvio, the western area of the Algarve, with approximately 6,000 inhabitants and within the fertile lands of the Barrocal which is a natural sub-region of the Algarve, located between the mountains and the coast. The downstream section of the river Arade separates Lagoa from the neighboring municipality of Portimão. Lagoa is located on a small hill in an area of plains where there was a lagoon (lagoa) which gave its name to the city.
The enchanting historic center of Lagoa offers a relaxing environment with whitewashed houses and cobbled streets, dominated by the Manueline church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, and the Convent of São José where the cultural center is located.

Some of the best-known golf courses in the region are between Lagoa and Carvoeiro: Gramacho & Pinta and the Vale do Milho course with nine holes.
One of the leisure options in the Lagoa region is Slide & Splash, one of the most popular aqua parks in the Algarve, located between Lagoa and Estômbar.
